The first useful steam engine was designed and made by Thomas Newcomen in 1712. James Watt is believed to have been the inventor of the steam engine, but the one created by Newcomen happened 24 years before Watt was born. If you are interested in steam engines, visit the steam engine graveyard in Touwsrivier, on the N1 between Worcester and Laingsburg.
