The Cape St Blaize Lighthouse was erected in 1864 and is the only South African lighthouse built of rocks. It is situated at Mossel Bay approximately midway between Cape Town and Port Elizabeth and is 20.5 m high. Until recently it was one of only two lighthouses manned 24 hours daily on the South African coastline. It is now fully automated, but the lighthouse still has light keepers. The lighthouse is open to the public from 10:00 to 15:00 daily during October to April. There is also a curio shop and a self-catering unit that sleeps six people that can be rented from Transnet.

“The beautiful Cape St.Blaize Lighthouse The Cape St. Blaize Lighthouse is located in Mossel Bay, South Africa, overlooking the Indian Ocean. It was first lit in 1864 and remains one of the few lighthouses in the country that is still manned. The lighthouse is situated on a rocky promontory, offering stunning views of the coastline and the ocean. Visitors can take a tour of the lighthouse, which includes climbing to the top for panoramic views. Nearby, there is a trail called the Cape St. Blaize Cave Hiking Trail, which follows the cliffs and offers breathtaking scenery. It’s also a popular spot for whale watching, especially during the migration season. (DRONE FANATICS SA)” - Chris Smit, 2024/10/13
