The pass lies between Worcester and Touws River on the N1, at the eastern end of the Hex River Valley. It is quite a scary ride for most truckers with its tight bends and fast descent, therefore care should be taken. Coming from the north, you get your first glimpse of the beautiful Cape Winelands as you enter the pass.

“The pass, derives it’s name from the legendary Heksrivier Witch. Eliza Meiring who lived on the farm Buffelskraal in the valley, was a beautiful, but haughty and conceited young girl. She eventually fell in love with a young, handsome lad named Frans. When he proposed marriage, she demanded that he climb the highest krans behind Buffelskraal and bring her a red disa from the very top. In his attempt to pander to her selfish request, he slipped and fell to his death. Eliza became mad through remorse and was locked away in an upstairs room for fear that she would harm herself. One night she escaped, climbed the mountain, fell, and was killed. The old people of the valley believe that on moonlit nights when snow and mist lie on the Matroosberg, her ghost may be seen as Eliza goes searching for her Frans. ” - Chris Smit, 2012/06/13
