Michell's Pass just south of Ceres has a very interesting history. It started with the first pioneers who battled their way through the Breede River Valley, to the first 'pass' built by Jan Mostert in 1765. He built it at his own expense and imposed a toll on the road. Although the road was dangerous and almost impossible to use when wet, it served travellers for over eighty years. Eventually, the first official Michell's Pass was built by Andrew Geddes Bain from 1846 to 1848 and named after Charles Michell who designed the pass. The pass was later widened and supplied with a concrete surface and reopened in 1946. Construction on the road as we know it today was done from 1988 to 1992. The pass was commemorated as a National Monument on 5 December 1998, at the ceremony celebrating the 150th anniversary of the opening of Andrew Bain's pass.
