Millwood Goldfields Museum is located near Knysna in the Garden Route in the Western Cape Province. It is situated near the Old Millwood Mining Village, which is today a ghost town. In 1876 gold was discovered near Knysna. Back in the 1880's, this historical site was the site of the Bendigo mines. Hundreds of hunters gathered in Millwood. Within weeks six hotels together with houses and shops. After a while not enough metal was recovered to sustain a town and its people. All the mining machinery was abandoned and Millwood became a ghost town. The goldfields were deproclaimed in 1924. At the museum there is a storyboard about the history and tales of some of the people buried there. You can also see the Bendigo restored mining equipment. Guided tours of the Bendigo Mine is available and the shafts are to 30metres underground. The Millwood hiking trail covers 5,6 km in this area. Visitors can also learn more about the Knysna Forest, woodcutters, indigenous flora and the elusive forest elephants. Freshly baked treats at the tea garden next door can also be enjoyed.
