The Matroosberg Private Nature Reserve comprises 1 000 ha of pristine mountain park - and a number of trails. The main trail has an average degree of difficulty and takes you up to 2 240 m above sea level. The turning point is right at the Matroosberg Peak, the highest point in the Boland, 2 249m above sea level. It's popularity peaks with the first snowfalls of winter attracting skiers, snowboarders, hikers, mountain bikers and pony trekkers. The main trail has an average degree of difficulty and takes you all the way up to the Peak, overlooking the Groothoekkloof Canyon. The more challenging, secondary 7-km circular route at the top of the mountain is well worth the detour. There is an escape route. The reserve is radically altered by the seasons - in winter heavy snow turns everything, including the trails, into a winter wonderland and a 4x4 drive into a unique experience and challenge. There is also a 4x2 trail leading to rock pools for swimming, a challenging 4x4 trail along the riverbed and an obstacle course. Permits are required. There are three accommodation options. These are camp in your own tent in a heavily shaded grove (flushing toilets and hot water), the six-bedded Goatherd's cottage, or basic ski hut, with hot showers, toilet, and utensils. Enjoyable activities includes snow-boarding, ice-climbing, fishing, quad-biking, hiking, mountain-biking, horse-riding, cherry-picking, abseiling, target-shooting, skydiving and paintball.(Information supplied by DriveOut Magazine).

“We did Matroosberg trail for the first time this winter. The trail itself was wet and slippery, especially the first part, but the reward of thick snow and sunshine at the top made it well worth the effort. We will be back for sure!” - JP Groenewald, 2013/08/18
