Bordering on the Augrabies Falls National Park, Daberas Farm is a 10 000 acre conservation destination. The main attraction is undoubtedly the wonderfully rugged scenery. Dry river beds cut narrow, winding paths through koppies of jumbled granite, against a dramatic backdrop of larger rocky mountains. The geology of the area is fascinating, and various minerals can be found littering the landscape. The arid climate doesn't support much plant life, but quiver trees are plentiful, and if you're lucky enough to visit after good rains (as Drive Out was) you'll find the farm carpeted with wild flowers. The trails make use of an existing network of farm roads and tracks. As a result much of the trail is relatively easy, but there is a steep, rocky climb near the start of the route that will test both driver and vehicle (soft-roaders and 4x2s should bypass this section). This takes you to one of the highest points in the area, with great views of the moon landscape of the Lower Orange River valley and the 1000m high Nama Plateau in the background. There are some sections of dry river bed which can be challenging, especially if the sand is hot and dry, and if you really want to test yourself, ask Kobus about the dune driving at Vaalsand. There is 1 4X4 trail of 25km long, and would take 4 to 6 hours to complete. A maximum of 10 vehicles are allowed. The best time of the year to do the trail would be from March to December (January and February are very hot). The trails are suitable for 4X4 vehicles, low range gears are required to complete the trail, the vehicle needs good ground clearance, trail guides are available, but not obligatory. Camping facilities and covered accommodation is available, swimming and drinking water is available. Daberas has a beautifully restored, self-catering "Star Tree" farmhouse which sleeps 9 and also the luxurious Cape Ebony Lodge which can accommodate 5, but if you've got a tent, rather go for the full wilderness experience and sleep out under the stars in the campsite. There are hot showers, flush toilets, braai spots and plunge pool at the campsite. Don't miss the nearby Augrabies Falls (good all year round, but most spectacular towards the end of summer) and the Orange River wine route. If you want to explore more of Daberas there are guided hiking trails (one-, two- and three-day routes). Mountain bikes are also welcome.
