Ashton was named by the first station-master after his English hometown, and was established in 1897 on the farm Roodewal, attaining municipal status in January 1956. It is an important wine producing and fruit processing centre. It is an ideal place for different outdoor activities that can be enjoyed throughout the year with hot springs where people can swim even in winter; art and craft route; kloofing and fishing.
