Clanwilliam at the foot of the Cederberg Mountain range lies on the N7 about 230 km north of Cape Town. It is one of the ten oldest towns in South Africa and the first Trek farmers settled along the Olifants River as early as 1732. The town was originally named Jan Disselsvalleij before it became Clanwilliam in 1814. It is reputed to be the only town in the world where rooibos is planted and cultivated for the production of the famous 'Rooibos' tea. It is also known for its locally made 'veldskoene' or leather shoes.
