“Piketberg is a town 130 km north of Cape Town in the Namakwaland district. It was laid out in 1835 on the farm Grootfontein at the foot of the Piketberg. and named after the mountain. From 1672 to 1676 military guards (piquet or piket) were posted there to protect settlers against marauding Khoikhoi bands under chief Gonnema.” - Chris Smit, 2024/08/24
