Vredendal, a town known for its agricultural and wine industries, supported by the Olifants River Irrigation Scheme. It has one of South Africa’s largest co-operative wine cellars, a modern grape juice plant, and dried fruit and food canning industries. Originally called Bakkeley Plaats, the town was renamed Vredendal ("valley of peace") after a conflict between the Dutch and the Khoi in 1668. Notable attractions include Namaqua Wines and an old Roman Catholic Church. The region’s wines frequently win awards and are highly rated, with opportunities for visitors to purchase wines directly from cellars..

“Vredendal, 26 km west of Vanrhynsdorp, developed because of the Olifants River Irrigation Scheme and was laid out on the farm Vredendal in 1933. Hence the name Vredendal.” - Chris Smit, 2024/07/13
