“In the 17th century the area surrounded by the Groot-Winterhoekberge (To the North), the Witsenberge (east), the Elandskloofberge (S/West) and the Hex River Mountains (S/East) was known as Roodezant. This was because of the appearance of the red sandy soil. At the end of 1699, governor Willem Adriaan van der Stel went on a tour of this region and renamed it 't Land van Waveren, Early in the 1700’s, gen. Jan Willem Janssens, cut off part of the Stellenbosch district and named the new district after Governor Ryk Tulbagh.” - Chris Smit, 2024/06/21
