Riemvasmaak is located near the Orange River in Northern Cape province of South Africa close to the Namibian border it forms part of the ZF Mgcawu District Municipality. The name when translated means to ‘tighten the strap’ or ‘tied with straps’. It was a military testing site until 1994 after which the families and communities were allowed to return.
