Gouda is a small town situated on Scenic Route 62 situated 37 km south of Porterville along the R44 within the Western Cape province, just 120km north of Cape Town CBD. The name Gouda is said to originate from the Khoi Khoi word meaning antelope.
The town is well known for the famous Gouda cheese. The town history dates back to 1800s when it was founded on the former farm named Gouda. The owners later donated the land for the establishment of a town, on condition that it will be named Gouda. Voelvlei dam and Bergriver nearby ensures great adventure for visitors as they engage in fishing, swimming, yacht sailing & canoeing. Wildlife viewing, bird watching and beautiful wild flower surround the mountainous area. For more information contact the Tulbagh Information Centre. (Updated Nov-12).
