Only an hour's drive from Cape Town lies the village of Botrivier. Merchants travelled from the Kaap de Goede Hoop to trade a variety of wares and full casks of butter and the town got the name Botterrivier as early as 1672. The fertile valley lies on the Cape Country Meander Route and forms part of the Green Mountain Eco Route and situated within the Kogelberg Nature Reserve borders. The beautiful historic Van der Stel Pass runs along the Botrivier which empties into the Botrivier Lagoon and is home to thousands of wild birds and the only herd of wild horses in South Africa. The fairly new wine route produces award winning wines.
