Mossel Bay, on the Garden Route, southern coast of South Africa about 450Km east of Cape Town, received municipal status in 1852. Bartolomeu Dias arrived there on February 3, 1488 and named it (Bay of Saint Blaise) In 1601 the Dutch navigator Paulus van Caerden, renamed it Mosselbaai (Bay of Mussels). Nomadic Khoisan people were the first inhabitants of the region. There are caves in the area where the remains of ancient Khoisan dwellings have been found. One of these is at the St Blaise Lighthouse at the Point. Mossel Bay is synonymous with good weather with an average of 320 sunny days per year. Summer rain, falls mostly at night. In 1992, the Guinness Book of Records reported Mossel Bay as having 'the second mildest climate in the world' (first was a small town in Hawaii). No Hurry. No Worries. Mossel Bay offers visitors the outdoors, beaches, golf, sport, culture, art, shopping and museums, such as the Bartholomew Dias Museum Complex. Most activities regarding play, work, eat and sleep can be found here.

“Klipheuwel Caves are situated a bit outside Mossel Bay, these caves are located on private property but are interesting for spelunking and exploring. The area surrounding the caves is rich in fossils and is part of the broader region's limestone formations. These caves offer a combination of stunning coastal scenery and deep historical connections, making them interesting for nature lovers and history buffs. “Mossel Bay. was initially named Angra dos Vaqueiros 'Bay of herdsmen' by Dias because he saw many cattle on the shore being herded onthe shore there.. It was renamed Aguada de Sao Bras ('wateringplace of St Blaize') by Vasco da Gama in 1497.” - Chris Smit, 2024/09/25
