Prieska is a small town 240 km southwest of Kimberley on the R357 in the Northern Cape Province of South Africa. The town was founded in 1882 on the south bank of the Orange River at the foot of the Doringberg. It was a fording place used by early travellers and originally named Prieschap, a Khoisan word meaning 'place of the lost she-goat'. From 1970 till the end of the century, the town boomed due to the copper/zinc mine 60 km to the west. When the deposits were depleted, the area reverted back to a lazy farming district. The area produces wool and mutton from the very large farms in the area. The town is renowned for its semiprecious stone, tiger's eye. Well preserved Bushmen paintings can be seen at the farms, Kleindoring and Omdraaisvlei in the district.
