Laingsburg lies on the N1, about 250 Km N/East of Cape Town, in the Western Cape province of South Africa. The town started life in 1878 as a small siding named Buffelsrivier on the railway line from Cape Town to the North. A village was laid out in 1881, initially renamed Nassau to avoid confusion with Buffalo River in East London. It was later named Laingsburg, after John Laing who was Commissioner of Lands at the time. It became a municipality in 1904. Laingsburg, with a total rainfall of about 100mm p.a, lies in the arid Great Karoo and for many years only farming of goats and sheep was possible. The main water supply is from the Buffels River. In the 1950's, an irrigation dam was built at Floriskraal, 25 km South of the town. Irrigation from this dam has led to lucerne, fruit and vegetables farming. In 1981, a disastrous flash flood in the Buffels River, washed away many of the historical buildings in the town.
