Malmesbury is situated just 45km from Cape Town CBD. The town was originally inhabited by the Khoi San people and later the town sprang from a few settlements erected around a sulphur spring in the 1700s into a bustling town. Malmesbury lies in a grain, wine, sheep and poultry farming district in the Western Cape Province of South Africa, about 65 km north of Cape Town. It was named after Sir Lowry Cole's father-in-law, the Earl of Malmesbury in 1829. It acquired municipal status in 1860. The town is the largest in the Swartland which is so named because of the Renosterbos, an indigenous plant, that turns black during the warm, dry summers. The town boasts of several historical buildings, like the old Jewish synagogue, museum and Ant Sienie se Huisie on the banks of the Dieprivier. The famous award winning Swartland wine cellars, wine route & agri route will ensure an unforgettable stay or visitors!
