The pretty seaside town neighbouring Bloubergstrand and Atlanta has a relaxed and tranquil atmosphere with a white beach popular amongst surfers, kite surfers and skin divers. The village is named after the milkwood trees growing in the northern side of town. The Koeberg Nuclear power station developed by the apartheid government in the seventies is located 6km north of Melkbosstrand.

“The town lies on the Atlantic coast with the Blouberg mountain to the east. It is named after the Melkbos (Euphorbiaceae) bushes that grow on the dunes and give off a milky latexlike substance, it is commonly referred to simply as Melkbos.” - Chris Smit, 2024/05/17
