There are various trails varying in length from 16 to 40km, and would take 3 hours to 2 days to complete. The trails are suitable for 4X2 vehicles with diff lock, the vehicle needs good ground clearance, a guide must accompany drivers, GPS waypoints are available, cellphone signals are weak or intermittent, camping facilities and covered accommodation is available. Isabis 4x4 trail is situated in the catchment area of the Gaub River, a sidearm of the Kuiseb.
It is approximately 130 km south-west of Windhoek and runs on two neighbouring farms, Isabis and Hornkranz. It is a very enjoyable, easy self-drive trail with the option to do two short and more difficult detour routes. Both novice and experienced drivers will enjoy the route, but remember this is not for soft road vehicles. You will need good ground clearance and low range in some parts. It is primarily mountain terrain with a couple of river/sandy crossings.
The views are awesome and the Leopard Gorge majestic. The route is well marked and all branches were cut away recently to minimize vehicle damage. There are shade and swimming pools en route. A route map is available on the brochure, but ask for more detail on recommended picnic spots and pools to plan your route.
GPS waypoints are not available, but not really necessary. For accommodation there are two rustic camping sites (Isabis and Klipdam) with running water, flush toilets and cold showers. Isabis can cater for a maximum of four vehicles, while Klipdam caters for groups up to twenty vehicles. Nearby Weissenfels Guest Farm provides alternative accommodation with conference facilities.
Activities on offer includes the remains of a Decca station which remind you of the times before GPS's were introduced. Hiking and climbing along Leopard Gorge, a spectacular 120m deep canyon of the Gaub River will take your breath away. Mountain bikes can be rented to explore the farm or as an alternative to do the 4x4 trail.
The Gamsberg Plateau and Spreetshoogte Pass with its spectacular views are also nearby. (Information supplied by DriveOut Magazine).

“Driving through the mountains over some rough tracks takes time, but gives one enough time to see a lot and enjoy the outing.” - David Smith, 2008/10/01
