Founded in 1902, this Catholic outpost was researching the traditions and beliefs of central Malawi's six major tribes through years when the Malawian government was trying to eradicate such 'primitive' beliefs. There is a museum showcasing a collection of more than 200 ceremonial masks, and there are also cultural immersion courses which last a day or more. Accommodation is then provided in charming chalets overlooking a riverfront village. There is also a woodcarvers centre and shop, a school for the deaf, a hospital, and traditional dancing to watch.
