Liwonde is Malawi 10th largest town. The name was derived from the influential Yao chief Liwonde. Besides being a town name, the name is also a name for the Liwonde National Park. The Liwonde town is situated at the juncture of M3 and the Shire river south of Lake Malombe. The town have two discreet parts, the compact Old Town centre and the satellite town referred to as Liwonde Barrage. The town is accessible from Zomba, Blantyre and Mangochi through well tarred road networks.
