Chikwawa is located on the west bank of the Shire River in the Southern Region of Malawi. The town has a population of approximately 12,000 and is the administrative capital of the Chikwawa District. The town was the first to be seen in 1859 by the European explorers, when David Livingstone's steamed up the Shire River. Chikwawa today is the gateway to the Majete Game Reserve, the Mwabvi Wildlife Reserve and Lengwe National Park. Malaria and Tsetse flies are a common occurrence in the area. (Updated Jun-2015)
