Lichinga was founded by the Portuguese east of Lake Niassa (Lake Malawi) in 1931 as Vila Cabral, and used to be a farming and military settlement situated on the Lichinga Plateau. It was upgraded to city status in 1962, and currently is the capital city of Niassa Province of Mozambique. The town used to have forestry-based activities and is still surrounded by a pine tree plantation.
