Maputo is the capital of Mozambique and an important harbour city. Founded as a port town by the Portuguese, the influence of travellers and traders from Africa, Asia, and Europe has made the city a diverse and lively metropolis. It was first known as Delagoa Bay but was established as the capital city Lorenzo Marques (LM) by the Portuguese in 1926. The name was changed to Maputo after independence in 1975. LM was an extremely popular holiday destination for South Africans with its cosmopolitan atmosphere, pulsing nightlife and excellent seafood. Maputo is a beautiful and lush city with streets that are lined with Acacia, Jacaranda, Palm and Flame trees and it still has the grandiose aura of a bygone era. The picturesque train station is one of the architectural treasures of the city that reminds of the Portuguese influence. The central fresh food market is worth a visit. Traffic and the non observance of normal traffic rules are bad but in spite of that Maputo is well worth a visit.
