This region incorporates both Kafue National Park and most of the Kafue River. The town of Kafue itself is not included here; it falls within the neighbouring Lusaka & Surrounds region to the east.
The region includes the town of Kasempa in the north but just misses Livingstone in the south, where it incorporates the western section of the Zambian side of Lake Kariba. Its easterly border lies between Blue Lagoon National Park and Lusaka.
The Kafue River is the pulsing heart of this area. After rising near the DRC border in the north, this watercourse flows southwards, drains the Lukanga swamp and then heads in a westerly direction before swerving due south again. Here it neatly bisects the northern sector of Kafue National Park, thereafter acting as the eastern boundary of the park’s central sector, before flowing into the Itezhi-Tezhi dam, after which it powers a hydroelectric plant at Kafue Gorge. Heading east, it crosses the vast and fertile Kafue Flats, a floodplain, before finally adding its waters to the Zambezi River.
While the river, its floodplains, and swamps are the geographical stars in this region, for travellers the primary drawcard is Kafue National Park. This is both Zambia’s oldest and largest park, and it offers explorers premium wildlife viewing along with a true wilderness experience.
This region boasts two other national parks, Blue Lagoon and Lochinvar. Both are wetland parks in the rainy season, offer great birding opportunities, and are within easy driving distance of Lusaka.
