With a population of approximately 70 000 people, Molepolole is the largest village in Botswana and the administrative capital of the Kweneng District. It's home to the Bakwena tribe, one of the largest in Botswana, and the first group to be converted to Christianity by missionary David Livingstone. The town was named after the Molepolole River.
Traveller DescriptionThe Kgosi Sechele I Museum was established in 1992 inside the old colonial police station, itself built in 1902. It exhibits the culture of the Bakwena and the history of the Kweneng District. A few kilometres west of Molepolole, the Ntsweng Heritage Site hosts the annual Dithubaruba Cultural Festival of the Bakwena.
The Scottish Livingstone Church was built early in the 20th Century and in turn established the Scottish Livingstone Hospital in the 30s. Both church and hospital are situated on the A12 main road which runs from Gaborone to Molepolole.
The 'Legoga Lwa Ga Kobekwe' (Kebokwe's Cave) also known as Livingstone's Cave, is just outside Molepolole, on the B11 road to Thamaga. According to Bakwena legend, a witch named Kebokwe was executed by throwing her off nearby rocks but she used her magic to land unharmed. Since then, giant snakes haunt the cave and surrounding hills. In 1847, David Livingstone, physician, missionary and explorer, convinced Kgosi Sechele I, chief of the Bakwena, that he would spend a night in the cave to prove that the spirits could not harm him. When he emerged unscathed the next morning, the chief briefly converted to Christianity.
