Jwaneng ('the place of small stones') is home to the richest diamond mine in the world, the Jwaneng Diamond Mine. The mine began operating in 1982 and together with three other diamond mines at Lethlakane, Orapa and Damtshaa, makes Botswana the world’s largest diamond producer, supplying about 25% of the world’s diamond trade in value. All four mines are operated by Debswana, a joint venture between the Botswana government, and the De Beers mining company of South Africa.

Traveller Description

The mining village developed with the mine and was, at first, only open to mine employees. But it has since opened its doors to the public and, today, travelers can stop here to refuel, shop, use the banking services, or stay overnight at one of the accommodation venues.

Jwana Game Park was developed by the mine. The 19 000 hectare reserve is home to several species, like cheetah, leopard, and caracal. The park is open to the public, but visitors should note that there’s no accommodation offered inside.
