ACCESS:
Sometimes the bridge across the channel at Third Bridge is submerged and broken, which means that the only way to Xakanaxa, is to drive back to South Gate and take the direct route from there to Xakanaxa.
ROAD CONDITIONS:
At certain times of the year, like April, the delta can be very low, as there could be a low rainfall season, but the levels should start rising from May onwards, depending on how much rain falls in Angola (the catchment area for the Kavango River).
From South Gate to Third Bridge you will travel along the edge of the delta, and depending on the level of the water, you can expect some water crossings at 1st and 2nd Bridge.
Sometimes the track from Third Bridge to Xakanaxa can be very sandy..
SERVICES:
Road transfers from Xakanaxa airstrip & Maun available.
Try not to camp under trees because of baboon excrement!
“A total new bridge was errected here and you are now able to drive between 3rd Bridge to Xakanaxa. However 4th Bridge is broken and closed and you have to drive around the water to cross at a shallow crossing.” - Mietsie Visser, 2023/10/26
“The bridge across the channel at Third Bridge is submerged and broken, which means that the only way to Xakanaxa, is to drive back to South Gate and take the direct route from there to Xakanaxa. At this stage there is only a pedestrian bridge which the Wildlife officers use. Plans to dismantle the steel bridge at Mababe and erect it at Third Bridge might take some time.” - Mietsie Visser, 2021/10/16
“Currently the bridge at Third Bridge Camp is broken. The only way to reach Xankanaxa and Northgate/Kwai from here, is to drive back to Southgate.” - Mietsie Visser, 2021/08/11
