Fort Cunynghame is a small town situated 10 km north of Stutterheim on the national N6 highway. The area along the Fort Cunynghame Pass is known for its magnificent views over the forests. Fort Cunynghame derives its name from the small fort and telegraph office built in 1878 towards the end of 'The Last Frontier War', and which was named after Lieutenant General Sir Arthur Cunynghame who was appointed commander of the British forces in South Africa from 1874 to 1879.
