Memel, on the Klip River in the foothills of the Drakensberg, is a small town about 220km south-east of Johannesburg in the Free State province of South Africa. It has a rural setting. It was founded in 1911 and became a municipality in 1917. According to legend, it was named after the port city of Memel, East Prussia, but none of the locals can verify this. The name means 'surrounded by water' in Old Prussian. The town is surrounded by the Seekoeivlei Nature Reserve, a massive wetland spanning some 30 km². Seekoeivlei, which was declared a Ramsar site in 1999, is also home to some re-introduced hippopotami (seekoeie) It houses more than 250 species of birds, and the town is now a popular destination for bird enthusiasts. Nature lovers from the big cities have moved in and renovated many of the old houses. The farming district is known for its high quality beef herds. There is Farmers Market in the town on most weeks. “If you drive past here, be sure to stop at Memel butchery (Slaghuis) for the best beef "biltong" and " droë wors" i.e. tipical South African dried beef and sausage.” - Mietsie Visser, 2019/05/10
