Dundee is situated in a valley of the Biggarsberg mountains in KwaZulu-Natal. It is a coal mining town founded in 1882 by Peter Smith and his son William Craighead Smith, he's son in-law Dugald McPhail, and a close family friend, Charles Wilson. The discovery of rich coal deposits by the Boer farmers led to the establishment of this town which now forms part of the Endumeni Municipality, Umzinyathi District. The town, born out of one farm (Talana Farm), then owned by Peter Smith, which he purchased from Mr Dekker, a voortrekker, expanded over time and the land on which the ever-growing Sibongile Township now, was originally given by Smith’s son-in-law.
