“In 1904, farmers from the Winburg, Senekal and Ficksburg districts petitioned for a town to be established on the farm Varschfontein. The OFS government agreed to this and the town Marquard was proclaimed in 1905. It was named after one of the community leaders, Reverend GGT Marquard,” - Chris Smit, 2024/07/02
