Oviston is a small town in the Oviston Nature Reserve, bordering the Gariep Dam near the small little Karoo town of Venterstad. The town originally housed the workers who built the Gariep dam, and after the completion the town proved so popular that it remained and was handed over to the Venterstad Municipality in the late 1970's.

“Oviston is a village 10 km north of Venterstad, near the Gariep Dam. It was started in 1964 to house workers on the Orange Fish Tunnel. The name is derived from the Afrikaans Oranje-Vis-tonnel, ‘Orange-Fish Tunnel’'” - Chris Smit, 2024/10/09
