Whittlesea is part of the Hewu Regions, and was established in 1847 to be a military outpost that would protect the farmers. For historical enthusiasts the ruins of some of the old buildings still exist. Whittlesea has a population of 80 000, with many informal housing areas. The dam outside the town, the Waterdown Dam, was built to provide water to the nearby town of Queenstown.

“Whittlesea s a small village 40 km south of Queenstown in the Eastern Cape. It was founded in 1849 and became a defence outpost in the Frontier War of 1850-1853. It was named after Whittlesea in Cambridgeshire, the birthplace of Sir Harry Smith, Governor of the Cape Colony from 1847 to 1852.” - Chris Smit, 2024/12/09
