Stutterheim is situated in Eastern Cape province border region within the Amahlathi Local Municipality. The town is a centre of large scale forestry production with large pine, gum and wattle plantations well established on the slopes of the Kologha Mountains. The forest is the second largest in the whole of South Africa after the Tsitsikamma forest. This makes the area picturesque. Animal husbandry is also the towns primary industry and a major source of income where sheep breeding for wool, beef and dairy products are sold. In recent years tourism is growing due to various attractions in and around town this have seen major revamps in the road infrastructure networks and local government. A very neat with standard supermarkets where the travellers can stock up their food stuff and medical supplies before travelling to the coast. “Stutterheim lies at the foot of the Amatola Mountain range in the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa, about 70 km from East London on the N6 highway to the north It was started in about 1872 and named after Baron Richard Carl Gustav Ludwig Wilhelm Julius von Stutterheim. who was a major-general in the British Army. in 1877, the government of Prime Minister John Molteno began construction of the railway line connecting Stutterheim to East London on the coast. The line was officially opened in August 1878, On 20 May 1879 Stutterheim was proclaimed a municipality It is a flourishing forestry area, which includes large pine, gum and wattle plantations on the slopes of the Kologha Mountains.
