Jeffrey's Bay was reportedly named after the senior partner of the firm Jeffrey & Glendinnings, a store that opened in the area of Jeffrey's Bay in 1849. Jeffrey was believed to be the first person to settle here. Between 1960 and 1970, Jeffreys Bay was known as a spot for hippies, and today Jeffrey's (or J-Bay) is a renowned surf spot, but also has long open beaches for swimming and walking.

“Jeffreys Bay is a fishing village and seaside resort 72 km west of Port Elizabeth and 16 km east of Humansdorp, on the western shore of St Francis Bay. It developed from a trading post, was already a popular resort in 1868, was settled by members of the public from 1918, administered by a village management board from 1926 and attained municipal status in 1968. The Jeffreys after whom it is named is variously identified as a trader, a shipwrecked ship’s captain who survived by building a hut from the wreckage, and a whaler from St Helena who opened the first commercial house there.
