Melmoth, founded in 1888 and named after Sir Melmoth Osborn, the resident commissioner of Zululand at the time, is a picturesque town just 200 km north east of Durban and 90 km from the coastal town of Mtunzini. It also lies on the Rainbow Route, an alternative means of reaching the coast, that starts in Mpumalanga and passes through Paulpietersburg, Vryheid, Melmoth, and Piet Retief and ends in the town of Mtunzini. Melmoth is essentially regarded as a good base for travellers wanting to visit places of interest close to the town. This town was once a gold rush town when gold was mined at Melmoth Gold Fields but it was short lived, only the remains of the deserted diggings are evident. For more information about the town visitors can contact the Melmoth Tourism Bureau. (Sept-15).
