At the foot of the Hangklip Mountain is the town which was named after Queen Victoria when founded by Sir George Cathcart. The town is also nicknamed the 'Rose Capital of South Africa'. It was built around a Hexagon in 1853 in order to protect the residents during troubled frontier times. The town is situated on the Komani River, which forms part of the Great Kei system of rivers.
