Butterworth is situated within the Mnquma municipality, Eastern Cape Province of South Africa. This is one of the oldest towns in South Africa and was originally established as a Wesleyan mission in 1827. During the war between the settlers and the locals the missionaries were rebuilt three times. It is affectionately called Gcuwa by the local Xhosa people. The town is the major economic drive in this municipality with various industries producing beverages, food, clothing, chemicals, leather goods and wood products to mention just a few. Tourism is also prominent in this area there are attractions such as the famous Bawa Falls Cape vulture colony and historical sites. Accommodation for travellers is all over the town. (May-15).
