Kestell

Kestell, in the foothills of the Rooiberge in the Maluti Mountains, is a small town about 250 km south-east of Johannesburg in the Free State province of South Africa. It lies just off the N5, about midway between Harrismith and Bethlehem. Founded in 1905 on the farms of Mooifontein and Driekuil, this tiny village lies in the most spectacular mountain areas of the country. It was named after JD Kestell of the Dutch reformed church, who served in the district as a Chaplain during the Anglo-Boer War (1899-1902) The most famous landmark of the town is the huge Dutch Reformed Church, designed by the famous architect Gerard Leendert Pieter Moerdijk, who also designed the Voortrekker Monument in Pretoria. Like so many others in the Riemland, this church and numerous other buildings, are built from sandstone. Many date back to 1806. Kestell is ideally situated for visiting the south-eastern Free States most beautiful sandstone mountain areas.
