Richards Bay, KwaZulu Natal, South Africa Richards Bay is named after Sir Frederick Richards a Commodore of the Cape, who started the harbour during Anglo-Zulu War of 1879. It is situated on a 30 square kilometre lagoon of the Mhlatuze River and was proclaimed a town in 1969. This harbour has grown to the largest in the country, with a well developed infrastructure. The Richards Bay Coal Terminal is the largest coal export facility in the world with a planned capacity of 91 million tons per year Besides rapid industrial expansion, the tourism industry of this region is growing rapidly.
