Dikeni (Alice) is a small town situated in Eastern Cape Province of South Africa. The town is part of the Amatola district municipality and was named after the daughter of British Queen Victoria, Princess Alice. Alice grew around a military encampment known as Fort Hare. It became well known as a mission centre and even to date it is well known as the site of the University of Fort Hare, where most South African political leaders were educated, the likes of Nelson Mandela and Walter Sisulu. The University of Fort Hare was established as a place of higher education of black graduates from Lovedale and other schools. In Alice there is the archives of the African National Congress which houses one of the most significant collections of African art. There is no tourism office specifically for the town, the visitors will have to contact the Amatola District Municipality tourism office for more information. (May-15)
