Port Alfred was established in the early 1820s. Originally it was two separate towns, Port Kowie as used to name the West bank by 1820 settlers arriving, and the East bank was named Port Francis. In 1839, William Cock was involved in canalising the present opening to the sea, which allowed sailing ships with heavy cargo to dock at the Wharf. In 1860, Prince Alfred, Queen Victoria's son visited and subsequently, Port Alfred was named after him. Port Alfred, situated between Port Elizabeth and East London, on the Kowie River, is well known for its beautiful beaches, temperate climate, river and deep sea fishing, and relaxed atmosphere, and the Royal Alfred Marina. There are many activities such as visits to the surrounding game reserves, surfing and windsurfing, shopping, birding, horse riding, canoeing, ocean sports, diving, golf, hiking and hunting. If looking for accommodation in Port Alfred you have the choice of B&B's, self catering, guest houses, Game Reserves and Lodges, self catering, hotels, caravanning and camping. There are also many restaurants to choose from. The Port Alfred Tourism Office can be contacted for more information or enquiries.
