Phuthaditjhaba is a mountain village on the lower peaks of the Maluti Mountains, situated on the banks of the Elands River. The city was formerly known as Witsieshoek, named after a Makholoko chief who lived there from 1839 to 1856. Its name has changed and is a Sesotho name meaning 'Meeting Place of the Tribes'. This is a large settlement such that there are different police station stationed just to be closer to the people like the Namahadi, Tseki and Makwane but still part of the larger city of Phuthaditjhaba.
