King William's Town began as a mission station on the banks of the Buffalo River in 1826, which was destroyed by the Xhosa in 1835. The Governor of the Cape Colony then declared the establishment of a town when the station was reconstructed, which would be named after King William IV of England. Today it is the administrative capital of the Eastern Cape. Plans to rename the town are underway.
