Dannhauser is situated within the Amajuba District Municipality but it also have its own local municipality in KwaZulu-Natal province of South Africa. The town was named after Renier Dannhauser, a German settler, who purchased the farm Palmietfontein from the Natal Government in 1872. This town was a thriving coal mining town which in recent years have shifted dramatically from large scale production to small scale production. Agriculture activities are mainly sheep and cattle farming which also forms important economic drive in the town. The town is situated midway between Durban and Johannesburg on the main railway line.
