The dam was built in the 1960s and is surrounded by grassland and acacia bushveld. It was the site of one of the most bloody and futile battles fought to break the Siege of Ladysmith during The Anglo Boer War. More than 600 British troops are buried there. It is a popular watersport venue. Fishermen can expect barbell, carp, and tilapia during season. Canoes are available for hire. There are numerous slipways for power boats and waterskiing is a popular pastime.
