Naude's Nek Pass is the highest dirt road in South Africa and can be done by most vehicles, but during winter time with heavy snowfall it can be tricky and dangerous, and probably more comfortable in a 4X4 vehicle. The pass is between Rhodes and Maclear and is based on the route taken by the Naude brothers in the 1890s. A bronze plaque at the picnic site before the climb to the top starts, tells the story of the two brothers carving out the route with picks and shovels. Naude's Nek is a very good birding spot and also one of the premier wild flower viewing sites.
